Batur Caldera Sunrise Trekking

Trekking with the Gods

The Batur caldera has been called one of the most beautiful in the world, and locals often refer to this trip as ‘trekking with the gods’. Once at the top of the caldera wall you really do feel as though you are in a sacred space where the peaks of mountains break out above the clouds, the the ocean spreads out on one side and the lake on the other, and the rising sun paints everything in vivid orange and yellow hues.

Your tour starts at Bali Sunrise Villas in Toya Bungkah village with hot drinks and a quick briefing from your English speaking tour guides. Then we make our way to Pura Ulan Danu Batur to begin the easy trek up the caldera wall. The trek only takes about 45 minutes to an hour, which makes this a great option for beginner trekkers or those looking for something slightly less challenging than Agung or Batur.

Once we get to the top you’ll be blown away by the incredible panoramic views that the rising sun reveals. Look to the left and you will see the rugged peak of Mount Agung, Bali’s most sacred mountain, as well as the ocean and coastline of East Bali. Look to the right and you will see the cone of Mount Batur and the crater lake below. On a clear day you can also see all the way to Mount Rinjani on Lombok and the Gili islands.

After we soak up the sunrise views with some hot drinks, we’ll continue our journey along the caldera crater past many authentic Balinese mountain villages. If you opt for the longer tour, we will also visit the Bali Aga village of Trunyan where you can witness the fascinating animistic customs of these ‘original Balinese’ people. Finally we descend to the either the tiny village of Pulak and take a traditional canoe back to the villas (on the short tour) or to the village of Abang and then to the restaurant at Bali Sunrise Villas for lunch (on the long tour).
