Jatiluih to Tamblingan Lake Trek

altRice is life. It’s that clear and simple to any Balinese.  Rice is part of their cultural and religious rituals. Rice is stuck to their forehead after each temple ceremony, rice is used as offerings and rice is what feeds them and keeps them alive every day.

Not surprising that Bali is one of the few places on earth made visually stunning by its main food source. The cascading terraces of rice fields remain a view that is breathtaking, and starting this trek at Jatiluih prooves my point. Actually “Jati” means truly and “Luih” means beautiful, as the name says in Balinese – truly beautiful!

Apart from rice there are also many other agricultural activities to view on this trek. See how the Balinese grow my personalalt favorite three vitamin “C’s.’, coffee, chocolate and cloves! Bali coffee is an addictive caffeine booster and along with a box of chocolates that is decorated with a photo of a Balinese dancer (available from any supermarket or the duty free airport shop), will make great gifts to take back home. Cloves I love for their medicinal value, and clove cigarettes are available all over Indonesia. The favorite brand being called Sampoerna that translates to mean perfection. Even non-smokers enjoy the scent of a perfect clove cigarette.

altAs the hike continues up the mountain and through the forest you will see a lot of Bali’s birdlife in their natural habitat, as well as a few monkey troops. This trek is one of our more adventurous and strenuous treks, and insect repellent is a vital necessity. Be assured that the scenery is worth the effort.

Descending down to Tamblingan Lake, your journey will end at the Corinthians Flower Garden. Assuring a soft landing place both visually and fiscally, completely different to the rice fields in the beginning. Ironically all you will need once you reach this point, is some rice and you are ready for your next adventure!

This trek can be done as a day trip, taking approximately 10 hours of trekking, or you could choose to have an overnight stay in nearby Munduk or in Jatiluih.
