Ubud can almost be referred to as the “Beverly Hills of Bali,” with a large expatriate community and frequent celebrity visits, from Charlie Chaplin in the past to the recent filming of “Eat. Pray. Love,” starring Julia Roberts. This interest in Ubud, however, stems from it being the arts and cultural hub of Bali. The creative energy and unique village feel is enigmatic and draws creative and artistic people to its inspirational serenity. Despite all the buzz and activity in and around the Ubud area, Balinese life and tradition still continue with daily offerings, cremations, with ceremonies and dancing happening between its fine dining restaurants, luxury hotels and rejuvenating spas. The fine line between tradition and development seems to never cross, but rather infuse to create the ideal location and life-style with a more moderate climate. To fully understand the cultural contrasts of Ubud we offer two touring options. Our first option would be a walk from your hotel (if in Ubud and ideally located) down to the Monkey Forest. Then this guided tour will take you to the Ubud Market and Ubud Palace, visiting some interesting museums and galleries on the way. After wandering the streets of Ubud we would then lead you through the rice paddies to enjoy a healthy luncheon at Sari Organic. Our second option is a nature walk for the traveler that would like to escape the street buzz, and has a need for some fresh air. We would start with a stroll through the rice paddies, and move on to a traditional village and family visit, where you can see the rural side of Ubud, and what remains to be the true Balinese way of life. Ubud - Payangan Sight Seeing Walk
The name for the royal village of Ubud is derived from the Balinese word “ubad” (medicine), the moniker of an herb with healing properties. If you should find yourself feeling healed and energized and would like to broaden your horizons, the Ubud-Payangan Sight Seeing Walk is the perfect opportunity to step outside the bounds of central Ubud.
Strolling down to the river, where this “ubad” or healing herb grows, you might see some Balinese villagers having a mandi (bath). Please note that taking photos of them would be considered rude yet you are welcome to make eye contact and smile. Your guide will then lead you through litchi, vanilla, durian and coconut plantations, as well as the less commercial market of Payangan village. The market used to be held only three times a week, but as the demand grew it is now open daily.
A sight seeing walk like this will definitely stir up your appetite, and in the nearby village of Kedewatan a famous spicy Balinese lunch awaits you at a warung (local restaurant) called Nasi Ayam Kedewatan. One might think “Ayam” is the word for “Yum” in Balinese, as you feast on this yummy dish, but it actually means chicken!
Pick up time and cost:
| Ubud | 08:00 AM | $35 USD Per Passanger - Based on twin share |
| Kuta / Nusa Dua | 06:30 AM | $45 USD Per Passanger - Based on twin share |
